Baby hair care is very basic. Use a shampoo specially formulated for baby's fragile skin Go here for information on baby care products and shampoos. Baby hair texture can range from peach fuzz to a full head of thick hair. If your baby's hair is thick, it's very important to rinse all shampoo residue from the hair. Lift the hair away from the scalp and direct the water straight through to the roots.

Cradle cap (or infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis) is very common in babies. It's ugly but harmless and generally runs it's course within the first year of life. Thick yellow scales cover patches of scalp and can be found in the folds of the neck, armpits, and diaper area as well. We don't call it cradle cap when it's on the bum, but it's the same culprit...seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Treatment

Babies with thick hair may be more likely to suffer (they don't actually suffer) from a prolonged case of cradle cap. Airflow to the skin is the most effective treatment for this common condition, so if the hair is thick, air flow is limited. To minimize the effects of cradle cap, be sure to remove hats or other head coverings when they're not necessary. Wash baby's hair 2 or 3 times a week and gently scrub in the effected areas to loosen the scales and rinse them away. As your baby's hair dries, brush hair and scalp with a soft bristle brush or smooth-tipped comb.
